in boston. but let's check in with some other news that we're following as well. fredricka whitfield is at the cnn center joining us with other stories making headlines right now. what's going on? >> hello, wolf. in colorado, tragic incident, five snowboarders are dead in the state's deadliest avalanche in more than 50 years. it happened yesterday at loveland pass, elevation 12,000 feet. nick is here with details on this. nick, we're talking about five deaths, but there is a survivor in all of this. >> there is. it's a remarkable story for him, and appears from all outward appearances these are very experienced snowboarders. they were wearing avalanche beacons all of the proper equipment, but the story of the survivor is a remarkable story. it was a critical move by him flagging down the colorado department of transportation. they believe if he didn't do that, they would still be looking for this group of individuals. they were in an area in loveland pass, behind a valley. it would have been difficult to spot them from the roadway. >> this is a national park. they were not at a resor

newsroom." i'm fredricka whitfield in for suzanne malveaux. here are some of the top stories for you this hour. north carolina a & t state university has lifted a campus lockdown. there were reports of a man with a weapon. the university website says classes resume at 2:00 eastern time. and then onto galveston, texas. there was a shrimp boat on fire in the houston ship channel. the coast guard reports three people were rescued by a nearby boater. no word though on what caused that blaze. >>> two tragedies in two separate countries sharing disturbingly similar details. in california and canada. two teenage girls hanged themselves after allegedly being raped. photographs of both alleged attacks were shared online. one big difference between the two cases, in california the boys accused of the crime have been charged. dan simon is following that story. he's joining us now from san francisco. dan, the suspects, tell us more. >> well, fred, first of all you know it's a story that seems to have a familiar narrative. here you have a large amount of alcohol consumed, there's a sexual assault
